We are all busy.

It’s best to just get that out of the way to start. Let’s accept that our lives are busy, days can be hectic and sometimes there is no end in sight.

I know there are meetings, practices, meals to cook, flights to catch, phone calls to make, appointments to book and homework to check.

I also know that we can’t use that as an excuse anymore.

Life will not suddenly be less busy someday.

I thought when I sold my previous business that I would have all of this amazing free time to focus on new projects. I daydreamed about the hours every day I could use on creative ventures and brainstorming.

It’s been two months and I have no idea where that supposed “free time” went.

Life will ALWAYS fill the holes in our schedule with the next most urgent thing. There will ALWAYS be someone who needs us or a deadline to meet. Toddlers will ALWAYS miss their naps on the days you need that time the most (Murphy’s Law :).

I’m not here to tell you to be less busy, because that just isn’t realistic sometimes.

I’m here to tell you that you have to make time in the busy-ness if you want to reach your goals.

It’s tough love, but it’s absolutely true.

The most common hurdle I hear from people who don’t exercise is that they don’t have time.

You have to MAKE time.

It won’t be made for you.

I decided a long time ago that exercise was one of my top priorities every day. The first thing is time with my daughter and husband, the second is any appointments or urgent matters that HAVE to be done that day (shakes her fist at the DMV), and the third is exercise.

No if’s, and’s or but’s.

My exercise time is non-negotiable. I give myself one day off a week because I know life gets in the way and things just happen, and that’s ok. We all need a rest day, and I’m happy to have it.

On the other six days, exercise is a part of my daily duties.

This started out as really difficult but, after 12 years, it’s kind of automatic now.

When you aren’t used to having something in your daily schedule, it suddenly feels like a huge burden to find time to add it.

I feel that way with making phone calls. There are times I need to make some lengthy and important calls, and it feels like the biggest stretch on my schedule to find one hour to sit on the phone.

But if it’s important, you WILL find a way to do it.

You are here because health and exercise are important to you, and I give you HUGE kudos for that!

But I wouldn’t be a great friend or trainer if I didn’t follow up to make sure you were making time for it.

The growing pains are hard, but once the habit is in place, you don’t have to think about it anymore.

I never feel like there is a stress on my schedule anymore to exercise. It’s such a normal part of my day that I just know I have to write it in. It’s as regular to me as brushing my teeth. If I don’t do it I feel completely “off” at the end of the day, like I missed something important.

You may have to shorten or drop another activity, and I know that can be hard. You may have to get up a little earlier or skip the lunch with friends.

But when it’s important, you will make time for it.

Start with 20 minutes this month. Commit to that amount of time 6 days a week and see how it feels. Commit to completing the entire monthly workout calendar and see if, just maybe, at the end of the month it doesn’t feel like such a burden on your schedule.

You CAN do this. You DESERVE it. Stop saying you are too busy, even if you are!

Say “I have time for this. I have time for ME.”

Then go do it.
